Digital Fabric Printing: What Do You Need to Know?

Digital fabric printing can feel a bit mysterious when you’re first getting started. What actually happens when you click “upload”? How do your designs become real-life printed fabric? What should you know before placing your first order?

This blog is here to demystify the digital fabric printing process and share what sets our approach apart here at Digital Fabrics.

What is digital fabric printing?

Digital fabric printing is exactly what it sounds like. It’s fabric that’s printed using digital technology. Just like your home printer sprays ink onto paper, large-format printers apply dye or ink to rolls of fabric using precise nozzles. This process allows for complex, vibrant designs with many colours to be printed in a single go without impacting the price.

At Digital Fabrics, we use two types of digital printing technologies to bring your designs to life:

Dye-sublimation printing
This method involves printing your design onto transfer paper, then using a high-heat press to bond the dye to polyester fabric. The result? Vibrant, permanent colour that won’t wash out or fade. The dye becomes part of the fabric, not just printed on top of it.

Direct-to-fabric printing
This method prints your design directly onto natural fabrics like cotton or linen. After printing, the fabric goes through a high-heat fixation process to lock in the colour. It’s the ideal option for customers looking to print on beautiful, natural fabric bases.

Both methods use water-based inks that are kinder to the environment, with no solvents or plastic components.

How Digital Fabrics print your fabric online:

Wondering what happens after you upload your file?

Here’s a peek behind the scenes at Digital Fabrics:

  1. You upload your design using our easy online uploader
  2. We process your file using specific software that prepares it for printing
  3. We print your design either directly onto the fabric or via transfer paper
  4. We transfer or fixate the design using our heat press technology
  5. We check for quality before carefully packing and sending your order

Start to finish, it’s a surprisingly fast and seamless process. We even offer express turnaround for those on tight deadlines.

Can’t wait to get started? You can order your fabric online here.

What makes Digital Fabrics different?

There are lots of fabric printers out there, so what makes our process unique?

  • Australian production: we print everything in-house in our studio in Sydney’s inner-west, meaning faster lead times and consistent local quality. We can personally check every order to make sure it’s perfect. We don’t send anything overseas to be printed.
  • Better colour results: our experienced team performs test prints and careful file handling to get your colours as close as possible to your vision. We can provide you with advice about how to get the best results and you can order a Strike Off to test the colour on your final fabric before printing.
  • No minimums: You can order as little as one metre to start — perfect for testing or one-off projects. We’re super-passionate about reducing waste in the textile industry and we hope that by offering you just 1m of fabric, we can reduce the amount of fabric that’s printed and then goes to waste.
  • Real support: We’re not just a website. You can contact our helpful Australian-based team with any questions you might have. We’ll even give you help with your file setup from our in-house design team if you’re really stuck.
  • Custom services: It doesn’t just stop at fabric printing. Here at Digital Fabrics we also manufacture textile-based products that can feature your custom printed fabric. Need your own labels stitched in? Custom finishing? We’re here for it and happy to help.

What do you need to know before you start printing your own fabric

Printing your own fabric is exciting, but a little prep can go a long way to ensure you get the best results. Here’s what we wish every first-time customer knew:

  • Start small
We recommend ordering a 1 metre sample to test your design, colour and fabric choice. This gives you a chance to see how your design feels, looks and drapes in real life.
  • Check your file specs
Make sure your file is set up at the right dimensions and resolution. Our uploader supports JPG and PNG files, and we recommend 150 to 300 DPI for best results.
  • Know your fabric base
Your choice of fabric affects how the colours print. A design printed on cotton will look different to the same file printed on polyester. Order a strike off if colour accuracy is important (you can do this in minutes using our Online Uploader).
  • Design for the medium
Remember that we can’t print white ink. Any white in your design will appear as the base fabric colour. Use this to your advantage when creating high-contrast or minimal designs.
  • Plan for small shifts
Some natural fabric bases may shrink slightly during printing and finishing. If your project requires precise placement, allow for a little movement. If you’re unsure, you can always ask!

Bonus advice for new designers

The most important thing is to start. You don’t need to be a professional graphic designer to create beautiful custom fabric. If you’re not sure how to prepare your file, we can help with that too.

Once you’ve got a creative vision in mind, upload your design, order a test run and see your idea come to life on fabric. It’s pure magic!

How to Create a Seamless Repeating Pattern Tile Using Canva

How to Create a Seamless Repeating Pattern Tile Using CanvaThis blog will explain how you can design your own seamless patterned tile that will actually repeat seamlessly across the width of your fabric. No tiny white gaps, no misaligned edges and no weird visual breaks.

In this post, we’re not using fancy or expensive graphic design software to create your file. We’re using Canva. So, read on to learn how to create a seamless repeating pattern tile using Canva. No graphic design qualifications required.

Whether you’re designing your own custom fabric for a passion project or looking to create custom fabric products you can sell online, this tutorial covers the essential need-to-know. Once you’ve nailed this tutorial, you’ve got all the skills you need to upload your own custom design file and start printing custom fabric online.

Why use Canva for custom pattern design?

Look, we love Adobe here at Digital Fabrics, but there’s no denying that it’s expensive, complex and arguably overkill for a lot of smaller design tasks. If you’re already using Canva for your marketing, mood boards or design mockups, it makes sense to keep everything in one place.

What is a seamless repeating pattern?

Before we get stuck into the tutorial, it’s important to understand what we mean when we talk about a seamless repeating pattern.

When you’re designing a pattern to print onto fabric you usually design for the fabric using a smaller tile that is then multiplied across the width and length of your fabric.

A seamless repeating pattern means your design joins together without any obvious edges or breaks. The motifs or design elements flow from tile to tile like magic. No awkward gaps, no visible joins and no surprises when your design becomes a physical reality.

If you are ordering custom fabric online and you want to ensure your design looks professional, learning how to master creating a seamless repeat is a must-have skill.

Tutorial time: how to create a seamless pattern tile in Canva

Read on to get a step-by-step walkthrough of the process to create a seamless pattern tile in Canva and get expert tips on how to ensure your design is flawless.

Step one: create your Canva design

Set up a new design using custom dimensions in centimeters.  It’s important to use CM as you will be printing a physical product. We recommend starting with a 45cm x 45cm square design as this tiles neatly in our standard 140cm wide fabric, but you are free to create canvas at any size! Make it smaller if your designing for a smaller product such as a zip pouch or larger if you are after a bold effect.

Step two: create your design

You can upload your own elements into the design (think illustrations, graphics or hand-drawn motifs) or use Canva’s elements — just be sure to check copyright if you’re planning to sell your design.

Step three: start creating your repeating elements

Canva’s Position toolbar is your best friend. You’ll use this to manually place duplicated design elements at precise X and Y coordinates to create that seamless flow.

For example:

  • Place a motif onto your design at -10cm. That’s negative 10 for the  X coordinate value which will move a motif slightly off the left edge of the canvas.
  • Duplicate this motif and using the Position tool and the X coordinate, move it 35cm in from the right. You need to also make sure the Y coordinate is the same and matching for both motifs. This means it’ll repeat perfectly when tiled. Remember your tile is 45cm wide, so you’re working from that to position the elements relatively.
  • Now, add a different motif  -5 cm from the top. To do this, use the Y coordinate which will move a motif slightly off the top edge of the canvas.
  • Duplicate the motif and place a copy 40 cm down the file using the Y coordinate. This time make sure the X coordinate is the same and matching in both objects. Again, work using relative positions against that 45cm design size.

This is where the maths comes in (don’t worry, the video walks you through it!).

Step four: test your repeat

Export your tile, re-upload it into Canva, and tile it across a new design to make sure the edges line up. This gives you a quick visual check before you upload it into our custom fabric uploader to print your own fabric.

Step five: export your tile for printing

Our pro tip is to always export your seamless repeat pattern tile from Canva at the highest quality and highest file size JPG you can manage. This will help ensure you meet our recommended 300DPI to ensure print quality. Avoid PNGs and PDFs, JPGs work best with our printing software.

Common mistakes to avoid

  •  Using pixels instead of centimetres
You’re designing for print, not screen — always switch your units to centimetres when setting up your design in Canva.
  •  Working too small
A 20cm x 20cm tile might look fine on screen, but it can become blurry or repetitive when repeated across metres of fabric. When in doubt: design big.
  • Forgetting to test your repeat
Just because it looks seamless on your artboard doesn’t mean it’ll print perfectly. Always test your tile before uploading. Make sure you stretch any background colours beyond the edge of your design for the same reason.
  • Relying on Canva’s AI pattern tools
Canva’s pattern generator is fun, but not reliable for actual fabric printing — the results often don’t tile correctly. We definitely recommend creating your own seamless repeating pattern in Canva by following this tutoria.

Ready to print your pattern onto fabric?

It’s incredibly easy to print your own fabric online using our Fabric Uploader. Simply take your exported pattern file, upload the file into our online tool and you can order fabric immediately. Not sure how to do this? Read our handy help guide here.

How to order custom fabric online

1. Upload your file

On the left hand side of the uploader you’ll see the action menu. From here you can click the button to upload your file. P.S. The first step of creating custom fabric or textile products using our uploaders is the same.

2. Check your file size

Ideally you want your uploaded file to be between 150 to 300 DPI, this ensures the best quality outcome. Double-check your file dimensions in cm, not just pixels! At the end of the day, you’ll receive a physical fabric or product, which will be measured in real-world dimensions—not pixels!

3. Select your fabric

Once your file is uploaded, select your desired fabric type and choose what you want to print (Linear Meter or Strike-Off). Unsure what fabric you need for your project? Read this handy guide.

Pro Tip: we highly recommend ordering a ‘strike-off’ before ordering meters of fabric.

What is a strike off? If you’re unfamiliar with fabric printing, a strike off is a small sample piece of fabric (20 x 20 cm) that is printed using your exact design on the specific fabric base you have chosen. This is important because colours will always appear slightly differently from one fabric to the next. Printing off a strike off will ensure you can colour match your design before printing meters and ensure you’re 110% happy with your final product.

4. Choose your pattern repeat

Adjust your design using the real-time preview on the right hand side of the uploader and select the most appropriate pattern repeat.

  • Full Drop: the image will be printed repeating across the width and the required length of the fabric.
  • Half-Drop: each row is offset for a dynamic effect.
  • Centre: the image will be printed in its entirety without repetition.
  • Mirror: the design is flipped to create a mirrored effect (Note: this doesn’t preview correctly on all products but will print as expected).

5. Place your order

Once you’re happy with the preview you can order your custom fabric by adjusting the number of meters of fabric you’re ordering. If you’re ordering a Strike-Off, you can select how many Strike-Offs you’d like us to print. The more fabric you order, the lower the cost per meter.

Then, simply add to cart and proceed to the checkout.

Shipping costs are calculated at the checkout when you provide your delivery details.

Why use our new uploaders?

Here at Digital Fabrics we want to make it as easy as possible to order custom fabric and textile products online. Here’s why our customers love our uploaders:

5 creative ways to use custom printed tea towels

When you think of a tea towel you’re probably transported straight to the kitchen, but we have news for you! There are many creative ways to use custom printed tea towels in your home and business.

To help you share our vision we’ve collated five of our favourite ways to take this humble kitchen stalwart away from the dishrack and out into the wider world. We’re talking impressive corporate or business gifting, standout events and achingly on-trend home decor.

Already sold? Click here to visit our new Tea Towel Uploader and create your own custom printed tea towels in minutes with Digital Fabrics.

1. Custom printed tea towels as textile wall art

Textile wall hangings are a must-have for current interior design trends and an easy way to create home decor that feels luxe without breaking the bank. Simply stretch the teatowel over a canvas frame or hang proudly with a magnetic clip frame.

If you’re a creative designer or illustrator who usually sells works on paper, perhaps it’s time you tried out a custom printed tea towel featuring your most popular artwork to diversify your products and add a new range to your collection.

Interior designers, rejoice! Our tea towel uploader makes it oh-so easy to create indulgent textile wall art to elevate your designs in minutes. No more scouring suppliers for that perfect print, just upload your own and we’ll create it for you (in our Sydney studio).

Personally? We love printing a variety of custom tea towel designs that then allow us to effortlessly rotate our wall art throughout the year. Think Christmas-themed tea towels in December and bold blooms for Spring.

2. Market your brand with unique merch or packaging

For small businesses, custom printed tea towels offer an easy way to create branded and functional merchandise.  Unlike traditional promo items (hello boring pens and mugs) tea towels are stylish, useful, and often kept for years.

By far one of our favourite ways to use tea towels in an unexpected way is as product packaging. Imagine the WOW-factor of wrapping your gourmet food products or a bottle of wine in a tea towel. It’s a marketing move that not only looks premium but also keeps your brand in front of customers long after the purchase has been consumed.

3. Wrap gifts in a more sustainable way

Not a small business? Don’t need merch? Have you ever considered using textiles to wrap your gifts?

Known as Furoshiki in Japan, fabric gift wrapping is a growing trend, and custom printed tea towels make it even more special.

Picture this: on mother’s day mum unwraps a bottle of her fave wine, olive oil or perfume wrapped in a beautifully decorated tea towel featuring artwork designed by her own family. How special!

4. Update your table styling with custom printed tea towels

Why stick to traditional napkins when you can use beautifully designed custom tea towels instead? Their larger size makes them perfect for rustic, layered table settings, and they add a touch of personality to any dining setup.

If you’re an event planner, wedding stylist or simply someone who just loves to host the most incredible dinner parties a custom printed tea towel is a unique way to invite your guests or elevate your table styling with a seriously luxe feel.

Our easy-to-use tea towel uploader tool will help you create a custom printed tea towel in minutes, enabling you to move onto planning the more intricate details of your event.

Fold them into elegant napkins or drape them as placemats. What’s more, your guests can take these beautifully considered styling elements away as a keepsake of your event.

5. Create limited-edition collectibles & fundraising items

Custom printed tea towels aren’t just practical—they can also be a fantastic way to raise funds, commemorate special occasions, or create limited-edition collectible items.

A beautifully designed tea towel featuring hand-drawn artwork, a team or class photo or signatures or a meaningful design can become a cherished keepsake while also serving as a high-impact fundraising product. They’re lightweight, easy to sell, and have a much higher ‘keepsake value’ than traditional fundraising items.

Brands and creatives, we’ve got you too! Launching a limited-edition tea towel collection can help generate excitement and exclusivity. Seasonal runs, artist collaborations, or milestone-themed designs (like ‘10 years in business’ commemorative prints) make for a great product option that customers will actually want to buy and keep.

Ready to think beyond the kitchen?

Custom printed tea towels are more than just a kitchen essential—they’re a blank canvas for creativity. Whether you’re styling your home, wrapping gifts, or using them to market your brand, there’s no shortage of ways to put them to use. If you’re still stuck for ideas, ask us for inspiration!

Digital Fabrics are a Sydney-based business obsessed with bringing the very best custom printed textile products to life. Whether you need a one-off special gift or a bulk order for your business, we make sure it’s easy to create beautiful, custom tea towels right here in Australia.

Meredith Gain

“Hi there

I’m Meredith Gain of MGK Designs and I’d like to share my inspiration and design journey for my fabric collection Beach Days that I’m so excited and proud to have available via Digital Fabrics and The Designer Project. I grew up in the carefree beachside suburb of Nth Curl Curl on the northern beaches NSW in the 70s where I spent my time swimming in the surf, exploring the rocks and generally having fun in the sun! My journey into surface pattern/textile design came about from my love of design and always the need to be creating! Prior to finding my way to textile design – after I had my 2 kiddos – I was creating delicious food as a chef for over 15years before I had my family and moved back to the beach for that carefree lifestyle I had growing up!

Creative Space

I now spend my days creating art for fabric, actually any surface that needs a design! And of course, I still love cooking! And always with music playing! I pursued my love of art and design via a surface design course at ISCD and won several awards at the time … This led to an opportunity to design a wallpaper and interior fabric range for Emily Ziz .. I now have 3 collections with them.  Alongside my interior fabric collections, I also continue to create for several print studios for swimwear and women’s wear … and even have a few rugs and carpet designs! I am happy to create and adapt my style to many different briefs and clients, but my natural handwriting lends itself to an organic abstract very textural coastal vibe. I love to walk the many bush tracks and coastal paths of sunny Sydney; in fact, any coastline will do !

Peach Breeze in the making

I gain so much inspiration and joy from the surrounding nature and I find this comes out in my art via the mark making and line work that makes up much of my artworks. The designs I have available here for Digital Fabrics are in a lovely warm palette of pinks, peaches and oranges, reminiscent of a sunrise and the happy rosy glow after a day spent by the beach; with sunscreen, sunglasses and hat on of course!! I work mainly on my iPad in Procreate to experiment & muck around.Working with layers and effects that I then upload straight to my mac to work on further to put into repeat and play with colours. It’s usually straight to Illustrator and sometimes Photoshop but I’m definitely team Ai !

Iceream Trek Original Art

Each design usually starts with a mark making frenzy when something inspires me. Again, mainly on the iPad but sometimes I like to spend a day and get the paints out to do a big batch of swirls, marks, shapes and lines that get used in my designs. Though I even recently did a piece using the only material I had on hand…a lipstick and a notepad!! I then take photos of the mark makings and digitise using image trace in Ai. This is where I like to play around with layers, textures, colour and scale. As it helps to visualise the end product, I like mockups to see how the designs might look on a skirt or swimwear. The colours are generally depending on if I have a brief or what I’ve recently seen that inspires me. On a recent girls trip away to Daylesford VIC I was so inspired by the scenery and the colours that I just had to create a mood board! It actually inspired the design SAND DRIFTS…even though I’ve changed up the colours for this collection!

Lipstick Art

My work is always evolving!

You can find my latest works in progress or my ‘just because I’m feeling it art’ on instagram @mgkdesigns and my website https://www.mgk-designs.com/

Beach Days is a collection of organic, abstract, all-over patterns; inspired by coastal walks by the beach. Many things inspire and remind Meredith of her childhood, spent living by the beach: bark on the trees, bird footprints in the sand, coastal bushes, sand hills, beach debris and lazy summer days! These designs would be great for any number of applications such as sundresses, swimwear, cushions, beanbags, tablecloths & napkins, tea towels, scarves, sarongs and beach towels! Each of Meredith’s designs are available to be printed onto any of our stock fabrics. Simply head to our Fabric Shop online to view the whole collection and choose your favourite fabric!
